Afin de donner accès à l'information publiée en Afrique ou concernant ce continent et encourager la publication locale, l'Organisation mondiale de la Santé, en collaboration avec l'Association pour l'Information et les Bibliothèques de Santé en Afrique (AIBSA) a lancé le projet d'un index international de la littérature sanitaire de l'Afrique.
Cet index est appelé l'Index Medicus Africain (IMA).
Pourquoi un index africain de littérature sur la santé ?
Les chercheurs et les organismes de développement ainsi que les administrateurs et les planificateurs dans les domaines sanitaires ressentent depuis longtemps la nécessité d'améliorer l'accès aux ressources d'information relatives aux problèmes de santé en Afrique. Or les grandes bases bibliographiques mondiales ne contiennent que peu de sources d'informations sanitaires et biomédicales africaines et il existe des données inexploitées dans des ouvrages, des rapports et des études émanant des agences internationales de développement, des organisations non gouvernementales et des institutions locales.
Pour continuer à progresser, il faut impérativement connaître les travaux qui ont déjà été faits. En conférant une visibilité aux publications locales, on évite les redondances dans les rapports de recherche ou la production de matériels didactiques sanitaires. Les études nouvelles pourraient dès lors s'appuyer sur les rapports de projets ou des travaux de recherche déjà réalisés. Il serait ainsi possible de réduire les coûts, d'améliorer les méthodologies antérieures et de donner à la recherche un surcroît de rentabilité et d'originalité.
On donne aux travaux publiés dans les pays africains une visibilité globale grâce à l'Index Medicus Africain, ce qui devrait favoriser l'édition en Afrique en incitant les auteurs à contribuer aux revues professionnelles nationales ou régionales, alors qu'à l'heure actuelle, scientifiques et chercheurs des pays en développement rivalisent pour quelques colonnes dans les revues internationales "de prestige".
Le flux traditionnel d' informations Nord-Sud est ainsi complété par la communication Sud-Sud et Sud-Nord: l'information sur les problèmes de santé d'un pays donné peut être porté à la connaissance de ceux qui font face à des difficultés similaires.
Quelles revues médicales sont indexées dans l'Index Medicus Africain ?
Toutes les revues médicales africaines peuvent être indexées dans la base de données de l'Index Medicus Africain. Les articles sur l'Afrique ou concernant ce continent, publiés dans d'autres revues médicales régionales ou internationales sont également indexés. Les éditeurs désirant que leurs revues médicales soient indexées par la base de données de IMA sont invités à remplir le FORMULAIRE suivant et l'envoyer au coordonateur ou Technical support.
